Feng Shui for garden harmony

This week we celebrated International Feng Shui Day, a good time to remember how we can potentially impact our wellbeing by making some simple changes around the home and garden.

A garden can be the perfect place to relax, unwind and clear the head, especially if it is well planned and maintained. Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art of manipulating and arranging the surrounding environment, in order to attract positive life energy – basically designing our living spaces to maximise tranquillity, luck and well-being.

To start, the back garden will optimally be enclosed by a fence, or trees and large shrubs, for security and privacy.

According to Feng Shui principles, the front garden should be left open to welcome all visitors, while the surrounding fence at the back provides strength and security. These fences, however, as well as any paths, will preferably be curved.

The Chinese believe that by placing things to encourage the beneficial flow of Chi (energy force) you can create harmonious change which affects health, wealth and relationships.

To ensure chi energy doesn’t run too quickly towards your home, allow paths to meander and curve through the garden though the use of shrubs, curved paths etc, which encourage chi to move more slowly and freely. If you already have straight paths and can’t change them, allow taller plants to grow ‘over’ them or place a few large pot plants strategically, so the chi can circulate freely around them.

Remove any rubbish or clutter from the garden as this can cause blockages in the flow of energy.

The plants in your garden can have a distinct effect, so be sure to choose plants that don’t have sharp or spiked edges (unless you specifically want them to form a barrier). Instead, opt for colourful, loose foliage.

Try to include all five fundamental elements somewhere in the garden – water (such as in a bird bath, fountain); wood (bench, planting boxes); fire (lights, grill) earth (soil, clay pots, boulder); and metal (seating, wind chimes).
