The colder months of winter might be closing in, but in many parts of Australia that doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy time outdoors. Here are some ways to ensure your sunny spots remain inviting all year round.
Cracked, splintering or rusty furniture not only looks unloved, but can be dangerous. Tighten or replace loose fastenings and keep wooden pieces resilient by oiling frequently – or paint them using a weatherproof paint. Likewise, if rusty metal is not too damaged, scrape and re-paint it using a rust-proof product.
Keep furnishings fresh and clean. Who, ever, wants to sit down on a messy, mouldy cushion? Remove and wash coverings regularly, and when they become faded, replace them. Waterproof fabrics are available in a wide range of colours and designs from haberdashers, but if you are not up to making your own, most hardware stores carry weatherproof furnishings.
Avoid lookalike furniture sets in your outdoor room. While it might seem at first an easy décor decision, it can in fact result in a less-than-cosy effect. Mix up the look by adding colourful cushions and odd seating such as refurbished pieces picked up at a kerbside clearance.
Plants are essential for your outdoor space, and while many of the colourful flowering plants disappear through the colder months, there are still plenty around. Look in your local nursery for winter bloomers or plants with striking, variegated foliage.
