Be prepared, now

Summer might still be a couple of months away, but homeowners are being warned to prepare now for another season of potentially fierce bush fires.

Not only should anyone building or renovating homes on the urban fringe or in rural and regional areas take increasingly extreme weather into account, but there is a need for all households to have an ongoing fire and storm protection plan operating permanently.

Understanding the risk is the first step. Contact your local fire services to find out more about the bush fire risk in your area.

There are some simple things you can do around your home to prepare it for a bush fire. Remember, you will need to prepare well beforehand, as leaving it to the last minute is too late.

Here are five simple things you can do now and during the fire season:

1. Trim overhanging trees and shrubs. This can stop the fire from spreading to your home.

2. Mow grass and remove the cuttings. Have a cleared area around the house.

3. Remove material that could burn, such as doormats, woodpiles, mulch, leaves, paint, outdoor furniture.

4. Clear and remove all debris and leaves from the gutters. Burning embers can set your home on fire.

5. Prepare a sturdy hose or hoses that will reach all-around your house. Make sure you have a reliable source of water.

For more permanent protection,

– Block up areas where embers can enter the house;
– Install metal fly screens on all windows and vents;
– Install metal gutter guards;
– Position gas cylinders on side of the house and away from trees and gardens;
– Direct any pressure valves away from the house;
– Move garden beds away from the house;
– Replace wood fences with metal fences;
– Use stones instead of mulch on paths and gardens.

Take time now to make your bush fire survival plan for the coming fire season and discuss it with your family. Finger crossed, you won’t need it.
