The polls have closed, and the decision is final – Australia’s favourite native animal sound is the iconic warbling of the magpie.
In a poll run by ABC Science this month, the black and white carollers took out 36% of the vote. The kookaburra flew into second place, followed closely by the butcherbird and the whipbird. The only Top Ten favourite sounds not made by birds were the banjo frog (7th) and the cicada (in 10th place).
