Pet doors are convenient for both humans and pets, giving your furry friends the freedom to come and go as they please.
With doors varying from cheap plastic models to expensive electronic ones (some even compatible with sliding glass doors), you just need to make sure your pet has a safe outdoor area to go to when it ventures outside.
Before installing the door, check your pet can fit through the opening. Installation instructions will vary from one product to the next, so be sure to read and follow them carefully.
Begin by measuring your pet around its mid-section to determine the proper door size. The opening should be a little wider than the widest part of your pet, and the height should be a couple of inches above the pet’s shoulders.
Keep in mind that, if your pet is still growing, you might need to buy a bigger door down the track. Most pet stores will stock pet doors, or be able to tell you where you can locate the materials necessary.
Once the door has been successfully installed, take a little time to focus on getting your pet into the habit of using it. Show them how it works, how they can walk through it to you safely, then get them to push against it (where necessary) or open it by themselves. Without forcing, you could try using treats or snacks to coax them through. Most pets will require less than two days to get the hang of it.
