Frogs are often heard but not seen, so we are being asked to record the sounds of our neighbourhood croakers this week, as part of a project to locate and count Australia’s frogs.
The Australian Museum is calling on citizen scientists to identify and record frogs in backyards, parks and bushland, using a smartphone app as part of FrogID Week.
The tiny creatures are under threat from habitat loss, disease and climate change, and it is hoped that recording their calls will help provide scientists with valuable data for their protection and conservation.
According to FrogID, each species has a unique call that male frogs use to attract a mate.
So far, a total of 211 species have been recorded as part of the citizen science project, with the most prolific app user capturing 13,761 different frog calls.
The app is available for free download from the App Store or Google Play. FrogID Week concludes this Sunday, November 20.
