Colour me bold in 2023

After the blues, yellows and greys of recent years, the colour of 2023 is going to be bold and fearless, Pantone has announced.

Widely recognised as the world authority on colour, Pantone Inc has this year decreed that the Colour of the Year 2023 is ‘Viva Magenta 18-1750’, saying that it is ‘a shade rooted in nature and expressive of a new signal of strength’.

What’s more, it is a ‘pulsating colour whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative’.

“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real”, Pantone Colour Institute Executive Director, Leatrice Eiseman said when announcing the selection.

“PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

“Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength”, she concluded.

As the colour is indeed a strong and bold tone, it is perhaps best not used on walls, but rather as an accent – on cushions, a throw rug, lamp shade or a statement chair.
