A rare chess set that features retro furniture on a board lined with colourful linoleum is up for auction.
The ‘Modern Chess Set’ by English artist Rachel Whiteread sets up as a war of the sexes, placing the miniature 1950s versions of everyday utilities and appliances such as sinks, stoves, ironing boards, buckets, washtubs and wastebaskets against leisure-based furnishings like armchairs, radiators and televisions.
Christie’s sold one of the seven sets in a 2019 auction for £10,000 (AU$17,380), while another recently went for £11,340 (AU$19,708).
