Last month we ran a story about a French construction company building homes in Ukraine using recycled rubble. Now, we find that an Australian company is doing similar work, turning rubble into bricks using portable factories.
Perth-based Mobile Crisis Construction (MCC) has developed mobile block factories that crush rubble to be pressed into recycled, interlocking blocks for the rapid rebuilding of shelter and critical infrastructure.
The units fit into a 20-foot shipping container for deployment anywhere in the world. When up and running, each factory can churn out 8,000 ‘Crisis Blocks’ in a day – enough to build one school, five large houses, or ten small houses per week. The factories use the rubble and waste materials to make blocks for the construction of sturdy, long-term structures in a very short time, with each mobile block factory producing up to 40 tonnes blocks per shift.
Since the blocks resemble inter-locking Lego bricks, there is no need for mortar, which the company says can be difficult to source in times of disaster and chaos. The blocks also have holes allowing rebar to be inserted vertically for strength and stability. This simplicity of design means that unskilled labour can be employed in the construction process.
