House on ice

On the topic of protesting the state of housing, two young artists turned an abandoned house in Detroit into an art installation almost 13 years ago, ensuring both it and the issue remain forever enshrined in history.

For their installation ‘Ice House Detroit’, photographer Gregory Holm and architect Matthew Radune rented one of 80,000 houses abandoned in Detroit when the 2008 credit crunch forced foreclosures across the US. After spraying the house with layers of water in sub-zero temperatures until it was completely enshrouded in ice, the duo documented the process in photos, blogs and a book, then recycled all the materials and donated the land to urban farmers.
