We’re considered ‘The Lucky Country’, and with the amount of sunshine we enjoy that is certainly true. Yet as our cities grow, more urban dwellers find themselves living in high density environments, which by their nature create gloomy, sunless streetscapes.
A new development near Sydney’s Olympic Park has tackled the problem by installing a heliostat on top of its 39-storey building. Commonly used in solar power plants, this clever technology consists of large, motorised mirrors that track the sun and bounce it up to reflectors which in turn reflect the light down into the streets below.
