Building a home using shipping containers might seem a good idea for the environment, but those long, narrow shapes do not exactly provide the easiest building materials.
A house designed by Swedish architect Måns Tham on the outskirts of Stockholm is a gleaming example of what can be done, however. Using eight standard shipping containers stacked in three levels and elevated on metal pillars, Tham removed walls between the containers to maximise living spaces while preserving the structural performance of the units. Glass walls and an open staircase allow for optimum flow of light and a sense of space.
