It is surprisingly easy for most of us to live with a degree of clutter from one week to the next. Whether it’s shoes at the front door, mail piling up on a bench or messages, artwork and photos on the fridge door, we tend to become ‘blind’ and not notice after a while.
When a home is on the market, however, it becomes important to not only remove the ignorable clutter, but keep it from accumulating again.
Here is a list of things to be aware of, especially before photos are taken and prior to open-for-inspection days.
Clear away:
– Toys and high chairs;
– Kiddy boosters at the dinner table, or in bathroom;
– Washing up racks and dishcloths, medication, jewellery, remotes;
– Non-essential electric cords;
– Magnets, photographs and stickers from fridge;
– Rubbish bins;
– Clothes baskets if they take up room or look messy;
– Shampoo bottles, makeup, soaps, toothbrushes and bath toys;
– Magazine racks;
– Dirty dishes, cups on kitchen sink or tea towels on oven door;
– Floor standing fans and portable heaters.
Replace:
– Change blown globes in light fittings and bedside lamps;
– Place clean fresh towels in bathrooms and ensuites.
Tidy up outside:
– Trim lawns and edges;
– Move cars from driveway or carport;
– Sweep paths and driveway;
– Remove hoses, skimmers and messy swimming items around pool;
– Wash down wheely bins;
– Take washing off the clothesline; retract or remove line if possible to make space;
– Clean up dog bones and droppings, pet bowls and beds;
– Put away shoes at the front door.
