Trees and nature have emerged as a major theme for the Venice Architecture Biennale 2021, but nowhere so much as in the installation by Danish architecture studio EFFEKT.
In answer to the biennale’s theme (‘How will we live together?’), EFFEKT has planted 1200 pine seedlings around seven architectural models, using a hydroponics system that’s remote-controlled from Copenhagen.
The idea behind the projects was to ‘investigate new ideas for living and building, for producing, consuming and revitalizing the ecosystems we are part of and depend upon’, the studio said. The trees will remain part of the exhibition for six months, before being returned to Denmark to be planted as part of an urban reforestation project.
The studio estimates the trees will be able to absorb more than 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the next 50 years.
