Are you sick of looking at those ugly tiles and cracked brown 70s-style shower glass and wondering what it might cost to renovate your bathroom?
Understandably, the answer will vary widely, depending on whether you settle for a simple screen replacement, or prefer a major overhaul resulting in a vacation-worthy spa room.
Other factors might include whether structural changes are required, the fittings and fixtures you choose, and even whether you purchase them separately or through your builder.
Housing Industry Association of Australia (HIA) data shows that the cost of an average bathroom renovation in Australia was $26,000 in 2023.
You could choose to simply have the screen replaced and paint the tiles yourself, but as a general rule of thumb, the HIA data shows that renovating your bathroom will cost anywhere between $8,000 and $35,000.
If your builder prefers to quote using a per square metre rate, HiPages says to expect around $2,300 to $4,600 per square metre for a bathroom reno.
At the lower end ($8,000 to $15,000), the ‘budget’ reno might include new tiles or paint, new handles and tapware, but with no changes to most of the major fixtures.
A standard ($15,000 to $35,000) renovation should result in a completely new look, but with some restrictions on the materials and fittings you choose. Beyond that price range, expect to be able to have the bathroom of your dreams.
Renovating a dingy bathroom prior to selling your home can be a good idea, but take care not to over-capitalise; the new owner might not want that fancy spa bath and surround sound system that almost blew your budget.
